Honey Wheat Bread Bowl Recipe

The sole thing better than warm soup on a chilly fall evening is really a bread bowl filled with warm soup on a chilly fall evening. I used to think that this soothing goodness was something which could just be seen at Panera, but lately I discovered differently. With relatively minimal effort, you can enjoy bread bowls full of your favorite homemade soup right in your own kitchen.

I learned something else cool while making this bread bowls. See those trendy slash marks in addition to that make the bread look oh-so-irresistibly-rustic? Uh-huh. You’re gonna understand how to do this too.


  • 2 C. water
  • 3 C. whole wheat germ
  • 1 C. white flour
  • 2 Tbsp. Olive oil
  • 3 Tbsp. Honey
  • 11/2 tsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. Ground flax seed (opt.)
  • 3 tsp. yeast


In a bread maker:

Run bread maker on “dough” cycle.

In a stand mixer:

  1. Add in all components listed above.
  2. Mix for 20 minutes with dough hook.
  3. Allow to rise for 30 minutes.
  4. Mix dough in mixer again for 5 minutes.

By hand:

  1. Knead the dough for about 10-15 minutes (more if you can do it!)
  2. Allow to rise for 30 minutes.
  3. Punch down it.
  4. After above Process is finished…
  5. Form dough into five equal-sized balls.
  6. Place dough balls onto a pre-greased baking sheet or on a non stick mat. * Make sure to space them out pretty far apart to allow a lot of room for rising without sticking. You don’t want them to stick together.
  7. Allow dough to rise in a warm place for 2 hours or more.
  8. Just before placing in the oven, use a sharp serrated knife to slash the top.
  9. Put bread from pre-heated oven immediately.
  10. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden-brown on the outside.
  11. Remove from oven and permit cooling.
  12. Cut off the shirts.
  13. Cut into a circle around the inside.
  14. Then ready for eat.
